AI routes in Yandex Maps: the map becomes an editorial product - обложка

Yandex Maps added walking routes with descriptions, photos and audio guides. More than 400 routes in 36 cities are now available, and their content is formed by artificial intelligence.

The map is no longer just navigation

Previously, the map answered the utilitarian question: how to get from point A to point B. Now the service helps you choose how to spend time in the city, and turns the route into a ready-made scenario. This shifts the product from the navigation category to the location research category.

From a design point of view, it is important to package heterogeneous content in a familiar route. One object combines geodata, editorial text, photos, points of interest and audio. The user must first quickly understand the theme and length of the walk, then see the key stops, and open the details as the movement progresses.

Route as a sequence of episodes

If you show all the data at the same time, the route turns into an overloaded map. So a stronger model is to design the walk as a sequence of small episodes. Each dot answers a simple question: why stay here and what the user will get from this stop.

Photos and audio in this scenario are not decorative. They switch the person from "get to the point" mode to impression mode. This is especially important in urban services, where value is created not only by route accuracy but also by the quality of user time.

What it changes for designers

This is a good example of generative AI beyond chat. Value is not created by the fact of the generated text, but by a whole experience on top of a familiar interface. For such products, clear hierarchy, gradual disclosure and transparency are critical: the user needs to understand what the route offers the service, and where he can adjust it himself.

The next logical step is to give the person more authorship: to change the tempo, theme, duration and order of points, without losing the integrity of the story. This is where design determines whether AI will remain just a content generator or become a useful guide through the city.
