Figma Config 2026: Canvas becomes a working environment for code, animation and agents

Figma hosted Config 2026 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco. Dylan Field took to the stage with one idea: Canvas is no longer a place for layouts - it is a work environment in which code, animation, shaders and AI agents live simultaneously. That's what they showed.

Figma Make: code now inside Figma, no terminal

Make launched in beta back in 2025. In one year, 60% of Figma’s largest enterprise customers reached it. Config 2026 showed the next phase.

Code Layers - Design and code live on the same canvas. You can import a repository from GitHub, work with it through an AI agent, pull editable design layers out of the code, change them right on the canvas and convert them back into code. No switching between tools.

Commits and pool requests are also inside Figma, without a terminal. This closes the loop between “drawn” and “defeated” without losing control of the outcome.

Motion, 3D and shaders – no longer need third-party tools

Three new layers that previously required leaving Figma:

Figma Motion - animations, transitions and timelines right on the canvas. Edited together, generated through an agent, uploaded to Dev Mode and MCP up to production.

3D transformations - depth is no longer simulated through folded shadows. You can now directly control the perspective.

Shader Fills on WebGPU - dithering, pixelation, matte glass, polished chromium. It used to require knowledge of graphic programming. Now you describe the effect in the prompt - the agent generates a shader with adjustable handles.

The logic is the same: AI should not produce a finished result that you either accept or re-request. It should give you a tool that you can keep spinning.

Agent Skills: Prompts become team assets

AI has made solo work faster, but teamwork is harder. Figma tried to fix it.

Agent Skills – users create custom commands like /contrast-improvements or /crit-recap, share them with the team and apply them to the entire design. An alien successful prompt can be found through a search and taken as a starting point.

This means that the best workflows with agents no longer die in one designer’s head – they become team property.

Weave inside Figma

Figma has integrated Weave - the workflow system it bought last year - as "AI material." Weave allows you to combine multiple models and image sources into a single design direction, for example for a campaign.

From this week, 20+ Weave tools are available on canvas. Full integration is expected by the end of the year. The goal is to give brand and product teams a shared space without switching between tools.

The context that matters

This is the first major Config since Figma's NYSE IPO. The stock is trading at about $19, about 88% below its all-time high. Revenue grew by 46% and recently broke a billion dollars a year.

The pressure comes from both sides. First, the external AI models that Figma uses (including those from Anthropic) eat margin. In April, Anthropic released Claude Design, a competing tool. Asked if Figma would build its fundamental models, Dylan Field evaded: "We're in a position where we can use the best of the market and train our models if necessary.".

Figma is not betting on models, but on the fact that 95% of Fortune 500 companies are already building products in Figma, and on deep integration of design with code that an external agent will not simply reproduce.

What does this mean for the designer now

Config 2026 isn’t “look how cool AI is.” This is a systemic statement: the entire stack from layout to production can no longer be left. Code, animation, shaders, agents, campaigns, all in one space.

Entry points worth checking right now are Code Layers in Figma Make (beta, waitlist on figma.com), Agent Skills - if your team already uses an agent in design, shader fillers - if you work with visual identity.
